Amasholanyama, the Bulawayo football giants, who turn 100 this year, were presented with a luxury bus by their benefactor, Wicknell Chivayo, at a ceremony graced by Acting President Kembo Mohadi in Harare yesterday.
A few Bosso supporters, the Highlanders executive committee, and the club’s board members, led by chairman Luke Mkandla, were present to accept the gift. Additionally, buses purchased by Faramatsi Motors were given to Dudley Hall and John Landa Nkomo schools.
“We gather here today, not only to celebrate the physical transformation of the football regime but also to recognise the transformative power of the educational sector,” said Acting President Mohadi during the handover ceremony.
“Football is a beacon of hope to all youths who aspire to positively contribute to their nation’s sporting excellency.
“The buses represent more than just a means of transportation; they symbolise our collective commitment to fostering the development of sports and education in our communities.”
The bus comes in to complement the US$300 000 kitty that Chivayo poured in for Bosso for their onslaught on the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League championship.
Set to get the virtually bankrupt club back on their feet, the sponsorship also coincides with Bosso’s milestone as they celebrate 100 years of existence this year.
Acting President Mohadi said the luxury coach represents more than just a bus, but a symbol of hope, unity and pride for the community. “This commitment by Chivayo to give back to the community sets an inspiring example for others to follow,” he added.
“Philanthropy is not just about financial contributions; it is about investing in the future of our youth and the growth of communities.”
Chivayo said Acting President Mohadi cannot be separated from Highlanders as he has for long been a supporter of the Bulawayo giants because of his late uncle and former Vice President John Landa Nkomo.
The Harare businessman grew up under the late patriot’s care, hence his love for Bosso, a club that was supported by the late Nkomo.
In his handover speech, Chivayo said with enhanced mobility, Highlanders are now expected to reach greater heights in domestic football.
“I am a young businessperson who has taken heed of President Mnangagwa’s clarion call — Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo.
“I am among those who have utilised the vast opportunities to conduct business in a manner that contributes to the development of our country,” he said.
Chivayo said the three recipients of his gifts played a huge role in shaping the person he is. He applauded the football community, largely emerging moneybags, for sparking excitement in the PSL last season with their enhanced money-spending habits.
The Bosso benefactor said he is expecting the trend to continue this season, as most clubs now understand the essence of investing in the game.
“We want more excitement in the game and improved welfare for everyone involved,” he said.
“This is why I have to keep giving so that God gives me more . . . if one wants God to continue blessing them, they should not stop giving so I will continue till the end of time.”
Highlanders chief executive Denzel Mkandla said Chivayo’s sponsorship comes as a huge motivation for the club.
He challenged the players to repay their benefactor’s kind gesture by winning games and also adding silverware to their trophy cabinet.
“If you look at the interior of the bus, it has all the comfort so the players can relax well before and after games as we travel to and from our fixtures,” he said.
“In turn, it means that their recovery is fast and performance enhanced.” Mkandla emphasised that Chivayo’s support for Highlanders cannot be understated and that it is now up to the club to be professional and give their sponsor value for his investment
