Kirsty Coventry has been awarded the Charles McCaffree Award by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA. Coventry is the current International Olympic Committee President.

Selected by the CSCAA Board of Directors, the Charles McCaffree Award recognises a collegiate swimming or diving graduate who has achieved outstanding success beyond the pool, exemplifying leadership, service, and lasting impact on sport and society.

Coventry, Africa’s most decorated Olympian, having secured sex medals (two gold, four silver, one bronze) across five Olympic Games, will be conferred with the Charles McCaffree Award at the 63rd Annual CSCAA College Swimming & Diving Awards Celebration on May 4 in Chicago.

CSCAA executive director Samantha Barany has described the first African, first woman, and youngest-ever president of the IOC as a worthy recipient of the award.

“Coventry’s career is defined not only by her extraordinary achievements in the pool, but by her enduring commitment to expanding the reach and impact of sport.

“Her journey exemplifies how the discipline, leadership, and resilience developed through collegiate swimming translate far beyond competition. As the recipient of the Charles McCaffree Award, Kirsty represents the very best of our sport—a champion who broke barriers in the water and continues to break glass ceilings through her leadership and service beyond the pool,” said Barany.

Meanwhile, Coventry emphasised the critical need to keep sport a neutral ground on Tuesday during the first day of the 145th IOC Session in Milan, Italy

“[We must] focus on our core. We are a sports organisation. We understand politics, and we know we don’t operate in a vacuum. But our game is sport…a place where every athlete can compete freely, without being held back by the politics or divisions of their governments.

“In a world that is increasingly divided, this principle matters more than ever. It is what allows the Olympic Games to remain a place of inspiration, where the athletes of the world can come together and showcase the best of our humanity,” said the IOC president.
